the Government which did not appear in the matter. The

remainder of the cost of this resumption, viz.:- $16,505,

which includes Messrs. Denison, Ram and Gibbs' commission

falls on the item in this year's vote.

The balance of the excess

$25,495-1s more than accounted for by works that had or

have to be taken in hand last year and this, either in

fulfilment of obligations to private owners or to take

advantage of work being carried out by private owners in

fulfilment of their obligations to Government. The complet-

-ion of Forbes and Cadogan Streets in Kennedy Town,

Victoria, ($5,500) and the forming of roads adjoining

Kowloon Marine Lots 53, 72 and 73 ($1,000) come under the

former category while under the latter are the Widening of

Des Voeux Road, Kowloon, past Gun Club Hill ($4,500) and

the retaining wall at Middle Road ($17,500) both being

carried out in connection with work done on these roads by

the persons making the reclamation at Tsim-sha-tsui Point.

I am taking a vote of $42,000 for

the excess on Item 19 pending the receipt of Your Lord-

-ship's approval and at the same time I am directing the

Director of Public Works to note a saving of $12,000 on

Item 17 to go towards meeting this excess.
